A friend of one of our technicians recently visited Ralph’s Radio to have a custom subwoofer system installed in his Mercedes-Benz E-Series AMG Wagon. The client had wanted a custom audio system for quite a while. With his recent purchase of this wagon, he knew the time was right for our team to start building the car stereo system he’s always wanted.
Mercedes-Benz Subwoofer System
We knew the client wanted something that would not only sound amazing and produce prodigious amounts of output, but would look like it belonged in the cargo area of this luxury wagon. We started the fabrication process by constructing a subwoofer enclosure out of ¾-inch MDF. The enclosure is braced internally and features a single slot-style vent between the subwoofers. The enclosure is home to a pair of Focal E30KX 12-inch subwoofers.
Once the basic construction was complete, our team faced the enclosure in white to make the gray-and-yellow subwoofers stand out. Four curved trim panels flank the woofers, and the vent was partially concealed using perforated metal mesh. A lower trim panel with a gentle arc matches the upper trim and top panel. All the trim was wrapped in black vinyl so that it complements the finishes in the car. The icing on the cake was four strips of white LED lighting strips above and below the subwoofers. When on, the white panels stand out and look amazing!
Rockford Fosgate Power-Series Amplifier
The woofers are powered by a single Rockford Fosgate Power-Series T1500-1bdCP amplifier. This single-channel amplifier is designed specifically to power subwoofers with as much as 1,500 watts of power. Our fabrication team created a custom metal mounting bracket for the amp that locates it behind the trim on the left side of the trunk. The bracket attaches to the vehicle just aft of the factory audio system amplifier. We used an Audison Connection line-level adapter to extract an audio signal from the Mercedes sound system. Audison Connection power and signal cables ferry electrons to and from the healthy amplifier.
Vancouver’s Car Audio Specialists
With the enclosure construction complete and the amplifier wired into the vehicle, our team finished the project by configuring the settings on the amp so that the output of the subwoofers would blend with the rest of the speakers in the vehicle. The client was not only thrilled with the way the system sounds but its appearance as well. He said he thinks a speaker upgrade is next on his agenda.
